Why Texas History Matters

Texas has one of the richest and most unique histories of any state in America. From Native peoples who lived here for thousands of years to Spanish exploration, the Texas Revolution, the Republic of Texas, statehood, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the oil boom, military service, space exploration, agriculture, and modern innovation, the story of Texas is one of courage, sacrifice, resilience, and opportunity.

Teaching Texas history in Texas schools gives students more than just dates and names. It helps them understand how the state they call home came to be, why our communities developed the way they did, and how past events continue to shape the present. A strong understanding of history allows young Texans to think critically, evaluate evidence, and appreciate the complexity of the people and events that built our state.

Texas history also introduces students to the individuals who made extraordinary sacrifices. The defenders of the Alamo, the men at Goliad , the Battle of Gonzales, the Battle of Velasco, San Jacinto, the families who settled the frontier, the soldiers who served in America’s wars, ranchers, farmers, educators, entrepreneurs, scientists, and civic leaders all contributed to the Texas we know today. Their stories demonstrate perseverance, leadership, and a willingness to work for something greater than themselves.

Learning about Texas also fosters a sense of civic responsibility. Understanding how our state government functions, how laws are made, and how citizens have influenced history encourages students to become informed and engaged members of their communities. History reminds us that every generation has both opportunities and responsibilities.

Texas is also a place of remarkable economy, and culture. Students benefit from learning about the many people and communities that have shaped the state’s development over time. Studying history through primary sources and factual evidence helps students develop research skills and encourages thoughtful discussion about the past.

Ultimately, preserving and teaching Texas history is about ensuring that future generations understand where they came from. Every generation inherits a story that began long before they were born. By learning that story, students gain a deeper appreciation for their state, their communities, and the people whose efforts helped build modern Texas.

Our history is our foundation. When we teach it accurately, thoughtfully, and thoroughly, we equip the next generation with the knowledge needed to understand the past and help shape the future.
